Celiac Awareness Month Shines Light on Celiac Disease and Food Options


ATLANTA (May 7, 2019) – May is Celiac Awareness Month, designed to raise awareness each year about celiac disease, which makes consuming gluten harmful to the small intestine. But people with gluten issues don’t have to wait for May to come around to be able to dine at their favorite establishments—many of Atlanta’s top restaurants cater to the needs of gluten-sensitive guests all year long. These spots all offer many gluten-free menu options, and some provide easy gluten-free swaps and substitutions, as well. Always let your server know about any food allergy or sensitivity when ordering. 


5Church Atlanta offers a multitude of gluten-free options, including smoked trout, herb-crusted beef carpaccio, charred octopus, coconut Georgia shrimp, steak salad, grilled hanger steak, Atlantic diver scallops and pork tenderloin. Ask your server about more options. 404-400-3669;


Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar in Virginia-Highland offers gluten-free items like shrimp and grits as well as gluten-free bread substitutions for all of its burgers and sandwiches. Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar helpfully labels its gluten-free items (like peel-and-eat shrimp, pimento cheese deviled eggs, roasted beet salad, wood-grilled mahi mahi and Maine sea scallops) with a GF on its brunch, lunch and dinner menus. 770-635-7641;


At HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern, guests can enjoy such gluten-free offerings as the Mother Nature salad, classic chicken wings, low country shrimp and grits, the Triple B burger (on a gluten-free bun), roasted cauliflower, pepperoni pizza and its superfood plate. All of the barbecued meats are gluten free at the newly opened King Barbecue at Savi Provisions (308 Pharr Road) in Buckhead. Choose from smoked brisket, chicken, pork or sausage and from an array of sides including pit-baked beans, loaded potato salad, spicy collard greens, coleslaw and red pozole (hominy, chopped barbecue meat and lime). 678.761.1833;


Loyal Tavern in Marietta offers many gluten-free options on its menu, including deviled eggs, hummus with veggies, boiled peanuts, shrimp and brisket tacos (both served on corn tortillas instead of flour), hand-cut fries, wings (tossed in Buffalo sauces or a lemon-pepper rub) and several salads (minus croutons). Gluten-free buns also are available for any burger or sandwich for an additional $1, and fried sandwich items such as fried chicken or shrimp can be swapped out for grilled options at no charge. 678-921-0456;


Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails in historic Crabapple offers a variety of gluten-free entrées, such as blackened salmon with pimiento cheese grits, garlic spinach and a citrus-basil beurre blanc, and Kentuckyaki grilled pork tenderloin served with creamed corn rice grits, fried Brussels sprouts and jalapeño honey.
